MOLINO STUCKY - VENICE

Molino Stucky has been given a new lease of life after complex restoration work lasting 5 years. With an investment of over 200 million euros, this work is one of the largest ever conversions in the world of an industrial structure, which has resulted in the Neo-Gothic building becoming one of the largest 5-star hotels in Europe.

The complex includes 380 bedrooms, 84 lodgings, 46 suites, 5 restaurants, a wellness area and a rooftop panoramic swimming pool, in addition to the largest congress centre in Venice (no less than 2000 seats).

The main challenge of the project was the replacement of approximately 1500 original window frames dating back to the early 1900s made with iron sections and single glass pane, since these were by now obsolete and non-compliant with current regulations as well as current requirements in terms of functions and efficiency.

Working together with the firm CRR Venexia, Secco Sistemi made a die-formed alloy section bar with a reduced cross section to which a metal grating was then applied so that the architectural impression remained unchanged.

The result has been a state-of-the-art frame offering high functional performance in terms of air- and watertightness and wind load rating, while maintaining the distinctive aspect of the facades and the position of the original window frames.

It took 55 tons of sheet brass to make 1950 frames for windows and French windows in Secco Sistemi Bronzofinestra, resolving the problem of the extreme variability of the types of frame due to the different end uses of the complex.

To ensure the uniformity of the surface treatment for the whole supply, as soon as they were finished all the frames were sent to the Secco Sistemi burnishing plant, where they were given the characteristic hue of old bronze and tested to ensure their structural resistance and durability.

Also in this important architectural conversion, Secco Sistemi Bronzofinestra made it possible to combine aesthetic and performance requirements, while resolving problems of deterioration and oxidation due to the marine environment and reducing maintenance costs compared to if normal painted frames had been used.
