Former Macello San Giobbe - Venice

FORMER MACELLO SAN GIOBBE - VENICE

Venice was once rich of guilds and the Guild of “bechéri”, (venetian for “butchers”,) was amongst the richest.

The main centre for this Guild (the Macello Comunale) was built in the mid 1800s on the Fondamenta San Giobbe, in the Cannaregio quarter.

The area was also rich in other industrial activities and, once these had ceased, together with the Guild activities, a big effort was made to regenerate the area and restore the existing buildings.

Specifically, in the past few years, the faculty of Economia e Commercio of the Università Ca’ Foscari has found a new home in the former Macello Comunale.

Within the Macello, big auditoriums have been created facing Venice Lagoon and all of them have thermal-break painted steel frames.
