MOLE VANVITELLIANA - ANCONA

The Mole Vanvitelliana, an impressive five-sided building commenced in 1732 by architect Luigi Vanvitelli, was originally an island used for quarantine and a warehouse for the ships docking there.

It then became a hospital for leprosy (Lazzaretto), a fortress, a military hospital, a sugar refinery, and finally a tobacco manufacturing site.

In 1990, the municipality of Ancona decided to restore the building and few years later it presented the restored Mole to its citizens as a space for shows and high-level profile artistic exhibitions, hence giving not only a new life to an important architecture but also a new cultural stimulus to the city.

The frames made of cor-ten wonderfully match the need to respect the architectural style with the highly functional content required by the new purpose of the complex.
