Fortress Castle in Porto Palo - Capo Passero, Syracuse

The imposing square building sits in its full majesty on the most southern tip of Sicily and it is characterised by the lighthouse built on one of the corners.

A recent restoration has given back shine and dignity to this fortress, built around 1606 on a deliberation under Philip III nephew of Charles V.

It was originally an observation and defence post for the attacks by pirates infesting the waters of the Southern costs.

It hosted many armies (German, Spanish, English, etc.) and to date the officers’ quarters, the troops’ barracks, a church and a well in the middle of the yard are all visible.

The accurate restoration has been completed with the frames made of cor-ten, especially appreciated in this context for the natural treatment of their surfaces.
